Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Karnataka on Thursday to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 10,800 crore in Yadgir and Kalaburagi districts of the state. On his arrival at Kalaburagi airport, he was accorded a warm welcome by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot and BJP state President Nalin Kumar Kateel. Prime Minister Modi later travelled to Kodekal village in Yadgir district along with them by special chopper.

Nepal Parliament to elect House Speaker today

Nepal’s Federal Parliament is set to elect the new House Speaker on Thursday, as per the schedule published by the parliament secretariat. The parliament proceedings will include the voting process to elect the house speaker as two candidates are in the fray. On Wednesday, Dev Raj Ghimire from the Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and Ishwari Neupane from Nepali Congress filed their nominations for the post. Neupane’s candidacy was proposed by Congress lawmaker Bishwa Prakash Sharma and was endorsed by Prakash Jwala of the CPN (Unified Socialist).

Shifting to old pension scheme may lead to liability add-up in future: Raghuram Rajan

As several state governments have shown their intent of shifting to the old pension scheme, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said that states doing so, would end up curbing current expenditure but may build liabilities for the future. He also cautioned banks on tilting too much towards retail lending. In an interview to an online portal on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos, Rajan said that the reason why the new pension scheme was adopted because in the old scheme, huge liabilities had built up.
